WHAT IS THE WARREN PROGRAM?

The ICA Warren Junior Chess Program has a simple mission: to identify nationally ranked Illinois youth chess players, and provide them with merit-based financial assistance for individual and small group instruction with masters and grandmasters. The primary goal of the program is to nurture the highest-potential Illinois students so they can be competitive on a national and international stage.

Currently, Illinois has almost 30 children who are nationally ranked in about the top 35 for their age group. Achieving a high level of success in chess requires a combination of innate talent and hard work. Intensive mentoring at a young age can propel our talented students to the very top levels of success. The intensive study offered by this program also fosters the kind of discipline, hard work and perseverance that will propel these students to contribute to society at the highest levels as adults.

BRING THE WARREN SCHOLARS TO YOUR COMMUNITY EVENT:

The program also aims to promote chess in the community. For the second year in a row, the Warren Chess Scholars have been invited by the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Special Events to participate in the annual Taste of Chicago festival in Grant Park. On Sunday, July 1, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., the Warren Scholars will offer festival visitors simultaneous exhibitions, chess lessons, and the opportunity for informal play. We hope you can visit us there on that day.

The Warren Scholars are also available to participate in other community events. They are a great attraction at neighborhood festivals, company picnics, business grand openings, or other special events. For information on how you can bring the Warren Scholars to your community event, send an email to warrenprogram@ilchess.org.

WHY YOU SHOULD BECOME A WARREN PROGRAM SPONSOR:

There’s been a lot written in the press lately about how American companies will soon be facing a shortage of qualified, educated professionals. While the emphasis in public education recently has been to bring the neediest kids up, there is very little focus and few resources being directed towards nurturing the brightest, most talented kids. The Warren program helps fill this void. Chess naturally fosters logic and critical thinking skills that can translate to many other areas later in life. The types of skills that the Warren program nurtures will help mold Warren Scholars into very capable and competent adults who will play important leadership roles in many fields. By helping to fund this program, you will be helping to provide a firm foundation for some of our state’s most talented youth.

I hope that you’ll consider making a contribution to this worthwhile cause. The Illinois Chess Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so your contribution will generally be tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor.
